Trauma, Addiction, Mental Health, and Recovery (TAMAR)

Overview

TAMAR is designed to assist incarcerated individuals who have experienced trauma and who voluntarily request participation.

Participants meet twice weekly with trained staff in a closed group format with the goal of identifying and practicing self-regulation strategies designed to alleviate the signs and symptoms of experienced trauma.

TAMAR is primarily a group intervention, but may include activities such as journaling and creative expression.

Hear from incarcerated individuals who have participated in the TAMAR program, and the DOCCS staff who help facilitate it.

    TAMAR Overview

TAMAR is a comprehensive curriculum that is generally appropriate for people who have experienced trauma and who are incarcerated. It is easily customized to engage and address the unique needs of special populations. In response to a Request for Proposals to the NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD) customized TAMAR to specifically address gender, adolescents, people who identify as LGBTQ, and people who have been victimized sexually while incarcerated.
