The Fugitive Investigations Division (FID) specializes in fugitive investigations, fugitive apprehensions, returning fugitives to New York State. The fugitive investigations include planning and dynamic high-risk entries within the scope and context of locating and arresting the Department’s most dangerous fugitives. Parolees who participate in the Supervision Against Violent Engagement (SAVE) program, sex offenders, and other high-risk releasees who are monitored thorough a GPS-device who abscond are investigated and apprehended by FID. Absconders who also commit a new serious, violent crime, such as murder, rape, or armed robbery, are also prioritized by FID for their prompt apprehension to promote public safety. The Fugitive Investigations Division further is responsible for returning out of state incarcerated individuals back to New York State that have violated their conditions of release in Community Supervision and assists with the transportation of Strict and Intensive Supervision and Treatment (SIST) cases upon their release from an Office of Mental Health (OMH) facility to a designated residential location or parole office. Many investigators in this division are deputized by the US Marshals Services (USMS) and participate in the USMS Regional Fugitive Task Forces and collaborate with the NYPD warrant squads among other police agencies. The Fugitive Investigations Division also handles “cold case” warrants through its “Cold Case Unit” and is responsible for the Department’s “Most Wanted” webpage.
