Licensed Practical Nurse

Licensed Practical Nurse/SG-10

Licensed Practical Nurses work in hospital or clinical settings where, using detailed standard procedures and as directed by physicians or registered nurses, they treat patients for a variety of physical maladies in order to assist in maintaining patient health, preventing and curing illness and injury and alleviating suffering.  

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must possess or be eligible to obtain a license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in New York State.

Nurses 1 (registered professional nurses) conduct health assessments; diagnose and treat an individual's responses to actual, potential, or diagnosed health problems through the provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being; and execute medical regimens prescribed by a licensed health care provider.  

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice nursing in New York State OR possess a limited permit to practice nursing in New York State OR be eligible to enter the examination for such license.

Nurse 3 (Correctional Services)

Nurse 3 (Correctional Services)/SG-20

Positions in this title develop and present major segments of training programs to improve the knowledge and abilities of those responsible for the medical care and treatment of inmates, and may provide direct care, instruction for care, and/or supervision and demonstration of treatment for acute medical conditions.  

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be in possession of:

  • a license and current registration to practice nursing in New York State;
  • a bachelor's degree in education, health education, nursing, public health, epidemiology, or biological sciences; and
  • two years of post-RN licensure clinical nursing experience; and six months of experience training nursing staff.  

A bachelor's degree in education or health education waives the requirement for six months of nurse training experience.

Nurse Practitioner

Nurse Practitioner (Adult, Community Health and Family)/SG-24

Nurse Practitioners provide primary, acute, and/or long-term care; perform physical exams; diagnose and treat illnesses and other health problems; and prescribe medications, medical tests, and treatments. 

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have a New York State License to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse; and certification by the New York State Education Department in a specialty area to practice as a Nurse Practitioner.
