The Departmental Mission

Vision & Mission

The vision of the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision is to enhance public safety by having incarcerated persons return home under supportive supervision less likely to revert to criminal behavior.

The mission is to improve public safety by providing a continuity of appropriate treatment services in safe and secure facilities where the needs of the incarcerated population are addressed and where individuals under its' custody are successfully prepared for release and parolees under community supervision receive supportive services that facilitate the successful completion of their sentence.

Goals

The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision:

  • Creates and maintains an atmosphere where all incarcerated individuals, parolees, staff, volunteers and visitors feel secure.
  • Develops and implements individualized treatment plans for those in its custody and parolees, including post-release reentry plans.
  • Teaches the need for discipline and respect, and the importance of developing a principled work ethic.
  • Establishes a risks/needs/responsivity approach to programming, treatment, and community supervision to ensure a continuity of services.
  • Assists staff by providing the requisite training and resources needed to perform their duties while enhancing their skills.
  • Offers career development opportunities for all staff.
  • Ensures workforce stability through mentoring and succession planning.

  • Offers opportunities for the incarcerated paroled populations to improve their skills and to receive individual treatment services based on their ability and willingness to participate.
  • Provides psychiatric and medically necessary services to those requiring such care and treatment can maximize their own state of health and rehabilitation.
  • Provides a level of community supervision based on the needs and behavior of the parolee.
  • Establishes an orderly and productive environment that seeks to foster respect through open communication, sound structure and fair treatment.
