The Canine Division (OSI K-9) is responsible for deterring, detecting, and interdicting dangerous drugs and electronic contraband; tracking individuals; and otherwise enhancing the safety of all employees, incarcerated individuals, releasees, volunteers, visitors, and others within DOCCS’ system, and other responsibilities as directed by the Deputy Commissioner/Chief of Investigations, the Commissioner, or designee. The Canine Division frequently collaborates with OSI’s other divisions to fulfill OSI’s mission. OSI K-9 investigators and their dogs are highly trained and certified by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS). OSI’s drug-detecting K-9s continuously train to maintain proficiency and the ability to detect ever-changing chemical compounds in dangerous drugs sought to be smuggled into and used inside New York State’s correctional facilities. OSI therefore has one of the best K-9 training centers in the nation, and OSI hosts an annual national training conference for canines working in correctional settings. Each year, the dedicated Canine Division seizes several pounds of dangerous drugs, numerous contraband cellphones, and weapons, and OSI investigators arrest hundreds of people each year attempting to smuggle contraband into a correctional facility. The OSI K-9’s efforts make the Department’s facilities safer for those who reside and work there.
